London "Skycycle" - Why exactly???

Not really sure why this is seen as the way to go. Other cities that have spent decades encouraging cycling don't seem to feel the need to have sky bound paths. See here

The best practice has to have some elements of practicality - this smells a little like the Simpson's monorail to me :-)
